Arthur Paul Koch was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1904, to parents Amelia Freese Koch and architect Arthur Robert Koch. As a high school student in 1922, Koch won a scholarship to New York's Pratt Institute.
Trained primarily as a muralist, Koch went on to attend the Art Students League of New York, and was a graduate of the Yale School of Fine Arts, where among his classmates was Deane Keller, who went on to become one of the “Monuments Men” of World War II.
Although he was an accomplished figurative painter, Arthur Koch devoted most of his life to teaching art to others and painted primarily for his own enjoyment.
