Ethel Reed, Boston's Mystery "It" Girl, Reed was, at the end of the 19th century, an internationally well regarded graphic designer and perhaps the best known woman artist in America. She was one of the first Americans to incorporate the budding art nouveau style into her work. She was largely self taught except for brief training with her friend and fellow citizen of Newburyport, Laura Combs Hill, and briefly with William Paxton at the Cowles School in Boston.
Her art production in her teens and early twenties was mind boggling; then she virtually disappeared with many feeling she died at age 24-26. She was said to have been a "picturesque beauty with deep eyes and tangled locks."Because of her charisma and looks, it was said
