Augustus Martin Gerdes [1869-1952]
August Martin Gerdes (more commonly referred in print as August M. Gerdes) was a German-American painter known for landscapes and the occassional portrait and even wood carving. Born in Germany in 1869, Gerdes emigrated to America by 1885 and settled in New York City. In the city, Gerdes studied painting at the Art Student's League of New York under William Merritt Chase [1849-1916] and Henry Siddons Mowbray [1858-1928]. During these years, Gerdes also took courses at the College of the City of New York where he enrolled in mechanical drawing courses.
