Barry Johnston is best known for his imaginative realism and his influence on many contemporary sculptors in freeing the sculptural figure from gravity. Born and raised in Alabama, he began drawing and sculpting the human figure as a young child, dissected animals to understand anatomy, studied classical piano, and visited numerous museums throughout his childhood.
Johnston studied under Jose de Creeft at the Art Students League in 1963, under Walker Hancock, Harry Rosen, and Tony Greenwood at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1964-1966, served in Vietnam in 1968, earned his B.S. Degree in Architecture from Georgia Tech in 1969, then studied under Michael
