Biography Bartolommeo Manfredi
Bartolommeo Manfredi was born sometime between 1580 and 1587 in the town of Ostiana near Mantua, Italy. He first trained in Cremona, Brescia and Milan before going to Rome. His arrival there is roughly dated between 1600 and 1606, and it has been surmised that Manfredi may have actually worked as a studio assistant for Caravaggio around 1603. He certainly was Caravaggio's most successful and influential Italian follower. He specialized in low-life scenes of taverns, soldiers in guardrooms, card-playing. Precious little is known about him and not one signed and dated painting by him exists. Nonetheless, on the basis of stylistic interpretation, a fairly large body of work has been attributed to him. He died in 1621.
