Biography Bayard Berndt
The following is from the artist's son, David Berndt, August 2003:
Bayard Taylor Berndt was an active member of the Wilmington, Delaware community of artists following the age of illustrators studying under Howard Pyle. He was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art as well as the Wilmington Academy of Art, where he later became Director. Berndt's instructors at the Wilmington Academy included N.C. Wyeth, Gayle Hoskins, Thornton Oakley, and Frank Schoonover.
He never felt a need to go outside the Brandywine region to paint, plus he was running a gallery/frame/art supply store full time. Berndt established Hardcastle Gallery as Wilmington's first art gallery, showcasing local artists.
