He studied at Cooper Union where he received a second prize in the late twenties. In 1936 he received the second prize in the American Contemporary Art National Competition. The Jury consisted of Stuart Davis, Raphael Soyer and Max Weber. He was one of the painters selected by jury to be included in "American Art Today" at the 1939 New York World's Fair.
