Biography Benjamin Shute
Ben Shute (American, 1905-1986) was an artist, arts advocate and
co-founder of the Atlanta College of Art. Shute trained at the School of
the Art Institute of Chicago and then moved to Atlanta in 1928 to work
temporarily for the High Museum School of Art in a teaching capacity. His position and efforts with the High Museum School of Art were long
lasting--he worked at the institution for approximately six decades, and
helped build the art school's reputation through its national
accreditation. In the mid 1940s, Shute established the Southeastern
Annual Exhibition that showcased work from 9 states in the Southern
