Biography   Benjamin Coe

Landscape artist Benjamin Hutchins Coe taught drawing in New York City and other surrounding cities for many years. He was Frederic Edwin Church's first teacher, and he also taught E.S. Bartholomew, and Charles Herbert Moore.

In 1854 Benjamin Coe settled permanently in New Haven and eventually dedicated himself to the temperance movement and gave up painting around 1864. He published a number of popular drawing books: Easy Lessons in Landscape Drawing (Hartford, 1840); A New Drawing Book of American Scenery (N.Y., 1845); Drawing Book of Trees (New Haven, 1841), and others.
