Born in Groningen, Holland in 1912, he went to the Hague as a child. After the secondary school there, he studied at the Academy for Arts.
He worked three years as a lithographic artist but moved to Blerick in the south of Holland where he married a daughter of a big farmer's family. His paintings of old towns and farmers' houses, mostly done in delicate lights and of an easy impressionistic style, are well known.
He exhibited in Antwerpen, the Hague and Amsterdam. He has taught many young artists and is prominent member of the Brugs School of Artists.
