Betty McArthur was born in Port Gibson, MS on May 24, 1866. McArthur studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy. She taught art at Mississippi University for Women until 1929. Upon retirement, she spent several years in the southern California desert and was active in Riverside. She died in Atlanta, GA on Jan. 9, 1945.
