The following information is from Walter Emerson Brown, great grandson of C. Emerson Brown.
My understanding is that C. Emerson Brown did not like his first name, Clarence.
From what I recall having been told by my grandmother, his daughter in law, and by my father, C. Emerson was at one time a taxidermist for the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem. Later, he became director of the Philadelphia Zoological Gardens. He wrote lots of articles and books on animals and camping.
