Biography Caroline Ransom
Caroline Ransom was born in Newark, Ohio and died in Washington, D.C. She was primarily a portraitist, but that was thrust upon her by necessity, as she definitely had higher aspirations. She went to New York City to study landscape with Asher B. Durand who told her that her "talents were better suited to portraiture" (my paraphrase).
Some of her subjects were Alexander Hamilton (in the office of the Secretary of the Treasury), James Garfield, Gen. George Thomas (a large equestrian portrait that was in the Capitol, but has been lost), and others. Her works are in many federal buildings, Lawnfield (the Garfield home in Mentor, Ohio), the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Western Reserve Historical Society, Shandy Hill in Harpersfield, Ohi
