Biography Catherine Adelaide Sparkes
A19th century English painter on porcelain, Catherine Sparkes, described as a "talented, all-round artist," (53) was the wife of John Sparkes, known as a progressive director of Lambeth School of Art in London where she had been a student and where he became a pioneer in the art of china painting.
One of Catherine's notable works was an enormous faince tile panel, which was exhibited by Doulton's at the International Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876.
During the 1870s, she did freelance work for Doulton and also she assisted her husband in his efforts to develop faience in Lambeth.
