Biography Charles Gray
Charles A. Gray was born in Tallyrand, Iowa in 1857, son of the town's only doctor, James Dudley Gray, who had emigrated there from Ohio. Charles early demonstrated a talent for portraiture, and already at age 15 was being paid to paint likenesses of local people.
He spent some years as a newspaper illustrator in Chicago, and as this might suggest, his style is more in the realist tradition than experimental. He painted several presidents and two speakers of the House of Representatives (the images are still on display there).
He lived for many years in Washington, D C. and continued to make a living by painting portraits until his death, in St. Louis, in 1933.
