Charles Evans is one of the most important figures associated with New Hope Modernism, and was the "Ev" in the "Ramstonev" Co-operative Painting Project.
Evans was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He began his artistic studies in New York at the Art Students League and the Parsons School of Design. He then went to Paris to study with Fernand Leger at the Academie Moderne. In 1929, he traveled to St. Tropez to study under renowned German artist Hans Hofmann. While there, he became friendly with artist Louis Stone. Together they went to Munich to continue their studies with Hofmann.
