Biography Charles Gifford Dyer
Charles Gifford Dyer was born in Chicago, Illinois, one of six children of Vermont-born Dr. Charles Volney Dyer who settled there in 1835 as the first surgeon in the region, at Fort Dearborn. By 1837 he also headed the Chicago part of the "Underground Railroad", helping escaped slaves to freedom in Canada. Dr. Dyer was a close friend of Abraham Lincoln, who as President appointed Dr. Dyer as a Judge under a treaty with the U.K. to oversee the abolition of slavery from the source in Sierra Leone.
