Charles Hudson Cox was known as a landscape painter, historical painter, and illustrator and is credited with "having preserved for Texas many depictions of landscapes of historical interest." (Samuels 111) In addition, Cox was an art teacher. One of his projects was a series of illustrations of "Evangeline" by Longfellow.
Cox was born in Liverpool, England in 1829. He studied and later taught at the national Art Training-Schools of South Kensington, London. He later became a successful cotton broker and moved to Norfolk, Virginia, and then in 1889, he moved to one of the largest cotton growing regions in Waco, Texas.
