PORTSMOUTH — Charles Sibley, regarded as this region's most important
artist for the past half-century, died of heart failure Saturday at Bon
Secours Maryview Medical Center. He was 83.
Sibley arrived in Hampton Roads in 1955, having exhibited in top New
York museums alongside artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Willem de
Kooning. Here, he almost single-handedly shaped Old Dominion
University's art department, where thousands of students aspired to his
high standards and found inspiration in his expressive paintings. From
