Charles Stillman was born in Massachusetts in August 1851. Stillman was a resident of San Francisco by 1877 and ran a grocery store there while painting in his leisure. After the earthquake in 1906, he moved across the bay to Berkeley. He died there on December 30, 1934. His paintings were shown at the Maritime Show at the California Historical Society in the 1970s.
