Biography Charles Sullivan
A painter known primarily for portraits, Charles Sullivan also painted landscapes and historical scenes. He was born in Frankford near Philadelphia, reportedly studied with Thomas Sully at the Pennsylvania Academy, and then did much much portrait painting as an itinerant. He traveled to Georgia, Tennessee and Wheeling, West Virginia where he settled for seven years beginning 1827 and painted landscapes as well as portraits. A painting from that period titled "The Ohio River Below Wheeling" is in the Oglebay Institute Museum.
In 1834, Charles Sullivan relocated to the Marietta, Ohio and remained there until his death in 1867. He established a studio in an upper room of the Washington County Courthouse. From there he sold portrait comm
