Biography Charles Norton
Charles Wardlow Norton was a Detroit, Michigan native, the son of John Norton, a tugboat captain. He was, chronologically, the first Great Lakes ship portrayer of the period. Although his work was quite primitive in style, he set standards by which other artists can be compared.
He worked as a marine reporter and vessel agent in addition to his early career as a marine artist. Norton's practical experience may have added to his reputation for accuracy and use of actual ship's measurements in his work.
In each of his works only one vessel is portrayed with very little atmosphere, sky, or effects of light. People are represented only as bumps on the deck.
