Charlotte W. Butler was a key ingredient in the formation of the Ogunquit Art Association. An early pupil of Charles Woodbury's summer art school in Ogunquit Maine, she was part of a group the Maine locals dubbed 'The Virginal Wayfarers'. Their paintings strongly resembled those of their teacher, but showed enough individual style to achieve some regional recognition and to insure a long-lasting acceptance in the Ogunquit Art Association which Woodbury and his colleagues formed.
She was also known in Ogunquit (including several other women) as one of the 'Pine Hill Girls' because she lived on Pine Hill Road which was walking distance from the electric trolley. The trolley, completed in 1907, transported them to town or to church on
