Biography Christian Couwenbergh
Christian van Couwenbergh was among the most successful Dutch
Carravagesque painters. He belonged to the circle of figure painters
around Gerrit van Honthorst and Dirck van Baburen who worked in the
monumental chiaroscuro style inspired by Caravaggio. Couwenbergh was
highly successful throughout his lifetime, even receiving important
commissions from the house of Orange. He moved to Cologne in 1656 and
worked there for 11 years before his death in 1667. This painting from
the collection of the Count of Stolberg-Stolberg is thought to originate
from his later period in Cologne.
