Clarence Emory Bates was born on a farm near Eugene, in Lane County, Oregon on June 9, 1910. Bates was a graduate of the University of Oregon and the Cornish School in Seattle, Washington. In 1938 he was an instructor of sculpture at the University of Oregon. In 1939 he was the Director of Fine Art at the Salem Art Center in Oregon. He also studied at the Carmel Art Institute with Jack Cunningham, and at the University of California
Prior to World War II he opened a studio in San Francisco, California. During the war he supervised Arts & Crafts programs for the Red Cross in the South Pacific. Bates settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1946. During the 1960's he taught at the Carmel Adult School. He later headed the Art De
