Biography Constant Mayer
Constant Mayer, figure and genre painter, was born October 4, 1832 in Besancon, France. He studied with Leon Cogniet at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, in Paris. He moved to New York City from Paris in 1857. He became a US citizen, and his works were popular in both Paris and the US.
In 1866, Mayer was elected an Associate member of the National Academy of Design, New York City; and in 1869, a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, in France. Other memberships include the American Art Union.
Constant Mayer exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1865. He painted portraits of Generals Sherman and Grant. Many of his paintings were life size, including subjects like Riches and Poverty; Song of the Twilight; and Lawn Tennis. Consolation was exhibi
