After graduating from the Royal School of Design, Dresden, in 1852, Herzberg studied under the landscape painter and designer, Ludwig Richter. In July 1853 he came to America where for five years he worked as a practical designer. When the school of the Cooper Union, then called the "School of Design for Respectable Females," opened in 1859, he was put in charge of the evening classes, taught freehand drawing and introduced the study of perspective.
In 1860 he became Professor of Drawing at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn on a part-time basis, and after 1874, when he gave up his work at the Cooper Union, became a full-time
