Cyrus James (C.J.) Doherty   (1890-1978)
Cyrus James Doherty, born March 27, 1890 in Chicago, was the son of Frank J. and Anna Doherty.  He was a scholarship student at the Art Institute at the age of 14, taking night classes while working full time at the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad to help support the family.  He later illustrated a book titled Shorn Fetters and was a published cartoonist with the Chicago Daily News.  In 1916 he vacationed in Saugatuck, Michigan, with his parents and brother where he painted a restrained watercolor of the Big Pavilion.  Shortly after the visit he joined the army and served until the end of World War I.  In 1925 he moved hi   ...  Displaying 750 of 1248 characters.
