The ironworks in Brooklyn was surrounded by all night activity—ships loading—barges refueling— ferries tied up at the dock. It was awake 24 hours a day.… In contrast the mountains are quiet except for occasional animal noises. Sometimes Streevers' hounds run foxes all night and I can hear them baying as I close up shop.
