A painter, and art teacher for sixty years, Della Bushnell's painting specialty was portraits, but she also did still life,
figure, marine, and landscapes in oil and watercolor. A realist, she wrestled with
techniques of detailing and said: “Anyone can paint a pussy willow, but
to put fur on it is a different thing.” (Dawdy 65)
The early part of her life she lived in Glenwood, Iowa, but had formal art training in Omaha with J. Laurie Wallace, who had been a teacher at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Remaining active in Omaha, although later moving away, Della
