Don Salmela produced many original water colors. His preference was landscapes, most of them autumn or winter scenes that reminded him of his childhood. Don's paintings feature outstanding composition, excellent water color technique, and a smooth, flowing style.
He was an illustrator for Brown and Bigelow in St. Paul, Minnesota for about 15 years, turning out calendar art for the world's largest calendar company. He painted many, many winter scenes, and specialized in landscape watercolors. Nearly all of his works at that time were watercolors, a medium that he became extremely talented in.
