Biography Don Smalley
A carver of classical-line figures, he works in Belgian and Italian black marble from his home, studio, and gallery in an adobe house on East Palace Avenue in downtown Santa Fe. Sculptors who have inspired him are Henry Moore, Alexander Archipenko, and Doug Hyde, the latter with whom he studied in Santa Fe.
Before moving to New Mexico in 1984, he lived for 12 years among the Makah tribe in Neah Bay, Washington and was so immersed in that culture, he was adopted into the tribe. He worked side by side with many Native master- wood carvers and developed a keen appreciation of Northwest art.
He has been represented by John Pence Gallery in San Francisco.
