Born in Brockton, Massachusetts, Donald Hickman painted portraits, still life, and western subjects in trompe l'oeil style.
Upon graduation from Vesper George Art School in Boston, he won a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Fellowship. He studied with Hobart Nichols at Oyster Bar, Long Island, and for two summers in Provincetown, on Cape Cod, with John Fraser of the Rhode Island School of Design and with Henry Hensche of the Pennsylvania Academy.
Hickman also studied at the Yale University School of Fine Arts where he earned a B.F.A. in 1950 and then earned an M.A. from Yale University Graduate School in 1951. He taught at Whitney Art School, New Haven in 1950 and 1951 and was Art Director at The Choate School, Wallingford, Con
