Biography Dorcas Birchim
Born in Danville, Indiana, Dorcas Birchim started painting in 1949 and by the early 1960s was seriously devoted to her artwork which included western ranch scenes, cowboys, Paiute Indians, wildlife, coastal views, and religious and political themes. In 1971, she added wood sculpture to her mediums, working in mahogany and redwood.
Birchim was raised in Segunda, California and spent her summers at Mammoth Lake in the Sierra Nevada. From 1941 to 1944, she attended UCLA as a psychology major and then served 22 months in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve. She married James Birchim and they settled in Bishop, California in 1948. From 1959 to 1968, she lived in Independence and then returned to the Bishop area where she was a founder in 19
