Dorothy Barbara Thomas was born on December 10, 1902, in Lawrence, Kansas, the daughter of Gomer M. and Emma (Barber) Thomas. She grew up in various locales in the Midwest before her family settled in California in the early 1920s. Although a history of her education is incomplete, it is known that she was a student at the Chouinard Art Institute, Los Angeles, in the late 1920s.
A resident of Los Angeles during the 1930s and into the 1940s, she maintained a studio in her home while working as an artist/designer/illustrator for Bullock’s department store and as a freelance commercial artist.
