A painter, etcher and muralist whose subjects included portraits, European street scenes, decorative and religious motifs, ghost towns, and landscapes of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Mexico, Dorothy Stauffer Hay was born in Red Oak, Iowa to Walter and Florence Brenholts. She showed art talent as a child. From 1919 to 1922, she attended the University of California at San Diego, and then completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University in Palo Alto with a degree in philosophy. She took art classes in Los Angeles, and in 1925, taught at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco.
From 1926 to 1928, she was in Paris, where she studied at the André Lhote Academy and the Academie de la Grande
