Biography Dorothy Bergamo
Born in Chicago, Dorothy Bergamo was a painter and lithographer who had a distinguished career as an art teacher and artist, primarily in the style of Abstract Expressionism.
She grew up in Chicago and had her first art instructor from her father, Glenn Johnson who was a commercial artist. She took many Saturday classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated with a BFA from there in 1937 and became a resident fellow the following year. In 1942, she married Ralph Bergamo and the year before earned an M.A. degree from Northwestern University. From 1943 to 1945, she taught at the San Antonio Art Institute in Texas before going to Arizona.
