Dorothy Tennant and Stanley were married at Westminster Abbey in 1890,
after Stanley's return from the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, the guests
including her friend John Everett Millais, for whom she had sat, Sir
Frederick Leighton, Gladstone and the African explorer Colonel Grant.
Stanley had met Dorothy (Dolly) Tennant in London in June 1885. The
daughter of the late Charles Tennant, the Glamorgan landowner and former
liberal MP for St Albans, and the society hostess Gertrude Tennant,
Dorothy was an artist and something of a socialite: 'The subjects of her
paintings included romanticized 'street urchins' and allegorical female
