Earl August Sherwan, born December 17, 1917, son of August C. and Florence M. Worth Sherwan, grew up and went to high school in Shorewood and lived in Whitefish Bay, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin in 1940 according to the Federal Census. He was listed as a designer for a Commercial Art Company in 1940 and was single. He later had a studio in Belgium, Wisconsin with his wife Marguerite, a lettering artist.
He studied on a scholarship at the Layton School of Art from 1935-1938. As a fine arts painter, he exhibited with the Wisconsin Painters and Sculptors and was represented in the Wisconsin Centennial Exhibition in 1948.
