Biography Edgar McKillop
Born in Balfour, North Carolina, Edgar McKillop became a well-known folk art carver, and his subjects included clocks, human figures and musical instruments, but animal figures were his favorite subjects. Most of his carvings were whimsical, and some were exotic animals such as gorillas, kangaroos, and rhinos. He also carved practical objects such as his carving tools, pots, pans, keys, plows and furniture.
His career as a woodcarver began about 1926 when he was offered four black walnut trees from a neighbor in exchange for removing the trees from the neighbor's property.
