A botanical artist, ecologist, writer and teacher, Edith Clements became in 1904 the first woman at the University of Nebraska to earn a Ph.D. In 1900, she married Frederic Edward Clements, and from marriage until Frederic’s death in 1945, the couple worked closely together to determine the relationship of plants to environment and to establish a correlation between Darwin’s evolutionary theory of animals to evolutionary theories of plants they were developing.
