Biography Edith Howes
This obscure artist, Edith Howes, exhibited her oil paintings and
watercolors regularly at the Boston Art Club (1884-98) and only one
year at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1896-97).
Howes was a member of the Copley Society and the Boston Water Color
Club. She focused on landscapes, local genre and views of
Boston. Howes traveled to Brittany in the late 1880s and visited
England in the 1890s.
Erica E. Hirshler, in A Studio of Her Own (Boston: 2001)
mentions an Edith Howe[s] as one of the council members at the School
of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which shows her esteemed talent and
degree of respectability.
