Biography Edith Martineau
Edith and her sister Gertrude were part of a small group of female
artists closely associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. She was the first
woman to be admitted to The Royal Academy School and was a prolific
exhibitor at The Royal Academy, The Royal Watercolour Society and
elsewhere. Her father was Dr James Martineau the noted Unitarian
theologian and minister. He moved to The Polchar, Rothiemurchus,
Aviemore where Edith and her sister worked for many years. Edith
Martineau`s work is listed in numerous public collections including The
Victoria & Albert Museum.
