Edward Charles Gribbon (1898-1931)
An entirely untutored artist, his work bears comparison to the primitive Tory Islander school of painters and like them, has been praised for its vibrancy and freshness of outlook. Gribbon was born in Belfast, but early in his life travelled to a Swiss sanitorium for his health. By the 1920s he was living in France, where he remained more or less for the rest of his life. He exhibited in France, London and Dublin (at the Angus Gallery and at Daniel Egan's gallery) and won the support and admiration of many fellow artists including Sir John Lavery. Dr S. B. Kennedy described his work as expressionist and as having a sense of urgency "quite different to and refreshing from that of his Irish contemporaries
