Biography Edward Howard Betts
A seascape and landscape painter, author books and film maker about art techniques, Edward Betts studied at the Art Students League and Yale University. He acquired an M.F.A. at the University of Illinois, Champagne, where he also taught from 1949 to the 1970s.
He began painting in the late 1940s on Monhegan Island, Maine, and in 1947 visited Ogunquit, Maine for the first time. He returned two years later with his artist wife, Jane Betts.
The area inspired Edward to change from representational style painting to abstractions. Of this transition, he wrote that "an artist should paint in whatever manner he finds most natural." (Tragard 89)
His work was exhibited in five Corcoran Biennials, and he is the author of books
