Biography Edward Roper
The following is submitted by Patrick Dreier:
Edward Roper (1857-1891) was an English painter and illustrator who made several visits to Canada. Perhaps drawn West by the completion of the long awaited transcontinental railroad and the opening of Canada's first national park, Roper spent several months in British Columbia in 1887, and made his final trip in 1890, traveling through the Yukon.
In both Canada and the United States a spirit of national pride became associated with the symbolic interpretation of the untamed wilderness as a promise for unlimited economic growth and prosperity. Important as an early explorer artist, Roper's works are held in the Public Archives of Canada in Ottawa and British Columbia.
