Biography Elena Mix Johnson
Born in Nogales, Arizona, Elena Mix went east where she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts on a fellowship, and was a student of Joseph Pearson, Charles Grafly, and Daniel Garber.
In Nogales, she was married to Hungarian immigrant Alexander Leroy Podwinetz Johnson, who had become a Captain in the United States Cavalry and was assigned to be part of the troops protecting the US border from Mexico. They had two sons, and one of them, Alexander Johnson born 1918, became the first neurosurgeon in the Northern Rocky Mountain five-state region.
