Born in Massachusetts in 1857. "Elsie" Allen was formerly on the faculty of Wellesley (MA) College and on the staff of Harpers magazine. By 1905 she had retired to private life in Carmel, CA where she was a founder of the Carmel Arts & Crafts Club. She died in Santa Cruz, CA on Feb. 18, 1920.
