Elizabeth "Lizzie" M. Newberry was born March 1st, 1864 in Chicago, IL. Her younger sister Caroline "Carrie" also became an artist. Lizzie attended the school of the Art Institute of Chicago between 1891 and 1893. She studied with John Vanderpoel and Pauline Dohn. Her family moved to Iowa in 1894 where she continued to paint, studied art some more, and operated a dance studio with her sister.
Lizzie painted both portraits and figure studies, as well as landscapes. A portrait of her sister titled "An Iowa Girl" was shown at the Iowa State Building at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, and received much praise in the local press. She also exhibited at a number of Chicago art galleries i
