Elizabeth van Osdel was born in Illinois in March of 1863 or 1864, the daughter of Charles Ruland van Osdel and Ella Mary Matlock van Osdel. She married William Cowan, a Scottish immigrant, and a carpenter and woodworker, in Chicago on Jan 24, 1889. She died in Chicago on January 7, 1932.
Elizabeth studied art with Alfred Payne in Chicago. She specialized in portraiture and exhibited three of her works at the Art Institute of Chicago's annual exhibitions in 1896 and 1898. She continued her art studies at the Art Institute's evening classes in the early 1900s.
